But it is not maintenance-free, and its performance still depends heavily on correct installation.

What Is LP SmartSide?

LP SmartSide is made from wood strands treated with resins, waxes, and zinc borate through LP’s SmartGuard process, then pressed into boards and protected by a resin-saturated overlay. The finished product has the depth and texture of wood siding but is engineered to resist fungal decay and termites and to handle moisture better than untreated wood.

That does not make it waterproof or maintenance-free. Water management, flashing, sealed cuts, clearance from the ground, paint, and caulk still matter. The product is strong; sloppy installation can still defeat it.

Advantage 1: Strong Impact Performance in Hail Country

This is a meaningful advantage in the Twin Cities. Engineered wood has more give under impact than hollow vinyl, which can crack when struck by large hail or a hard-thrown basketball. LP’s current limited warranty includes specifically defined hail damage for hailstones up to 1.75 inches in diameter, subject to the warranty’s conditions and exclusions. Cold-weather installation still requires judgment. Paint, sealants, flashing tapes, and other components have their own temperature limits. A good crew follows the requirements for the entire wall system, not just the siding board.

SmartSide lap siding is available in 16-foot lengths. On long walls, that can mean fewer visible joints than many vinyl or fiber-cement layouts and a cleaner, more continuous appearance.

Fewer seams are not permission to get casual with the remaining ones. Butt joints, clearances, flashing, fastening, and sealed field cuts must follow the instructions for the exact SmartSide product being installed.

LP SmartSide has more depth and a more substantial feel than typical vinyl siding. Advantage 5: A Strong Warranty—With Important Fine Print

The standard LP SmartSide substrate warranty is often described as a "5/50 warranty." In plain English:

• During the first five years, the limited remedy can include qualifying labor and material costs.
• During years six through 50, the substrate remedy is generally limited to material and is reduced annually on a prorated schedule.
• Installation, finishing, and maintenance requirements must be followed.
• LP defines what counts as substrate damage and hail damage; ordinary wear or every surface mark is not automatically covered.

ExpertFinish products also have separate limited finish coverage. Warranty versions and installer-program benefits can change, so the warranty that applies to the exact product and installation date matters more than a generic "50-year" claim.

The blunt truth: a 50-year label does not mean 50 years of full labor-and-material replacement. The warranty is still valuable, but homeowners deserve the real version, not the carnival-barker version.

LP SmartSide vs. Vinyl vs. Fiber Cement

There is no universal winner. Quality vinyl is often the practical budget choice. Fiber cement may be the better fit where noncombustible cladding is a priority. LP SmartSide is compelling when the homeowner wants a richer look, strong impact performance, and more design flexibility—and accepts that paint and detailing still need attention.

Installation Details That Matter More Than the Logo

The product is only half the system. Before choosing a contractor, ask how the crew will handle:

• Flashing above windows, doors, horizontal trim, and roof-to-wall transitions
• Required gaps at joints and above flashing
• Sealing exposed field cuts
• Clearance from roofing, decks, hard surfaces, and finished grade
• Fastener type, placement, and depth
• Housewrap, water-resistive barrier, and any damaged sheathing uncovered during tear-off
• Final inspection of paint, caulk, joints, gutters, and water drainage

Those are not glamorous sales-table topics. They are the details that decide whether the wall still looks good a decade later.

What Maintenance Should Minnesota Homeowners Expect?

LP’s care guidance calls for regular inspection rather than neglect. Homeowners should keep sprinklers from soaking the siding, keep gutters working, preserve required clearance from soil and mulch, replace failed caulk, and repaint before the existing coating fails. LP also recommends low-pressure cleaning rather than blasting the siding with a pressure washer.

Once a year, walk the exterior and look closely at the bottom courses, areas below windows, joints, caulk, flashing, and any place water repeatedly lands. Small maintenance is cheap. Ignored water entry is not.

When LP SmartSide May Not Be the Best Choice

LP SmartSide may be the wrong fit when:

• The lowest initial price is the main goal; quality vinyl will usually cost less.
• The homeowner wants the least possible painting or caulk maintenance.
• A noncombustible cladding is required or strongly preferred.
• The proposal does not clearly address flashing, clearances, cut-edge sealing, and wall preparation.
• The contractor promises that the product is waterproof, maintenance-free, or covered in full for 50 years.

Any of those last three promises should make your eyebrow go up. Possibly both eyebrows.

Is LP SmartSide Worth It for a Minnesota Home?

For many Twin Cities homes, yes. LP SmartSide offers a convincing wood appearance, strong impact performance, long boards, and excellent design flexibility. Its trade-offs are a higher upfront cost than vinyl, periodic paint and caulk maintenance, and a heavy dependence on correct installation.
