It often costs more than vinyl, so the decision should reflect the homeowner’s priorities rather than a fantasy that any exterior material is indestructible.

The City’s residential siding handout says all siding projects require a permit and inspections. It also calls for an electrical rough-in inspection after the weather barrier is installed and before siding covers the wall, with fixtures removed so boxes and blocking can be inspected. An electrical final is required after fixtures are reinstalled and weatherproofed.

Siding sheds most rain, but water can still reach the drainage plane. Housewrap, seams, window and door flashing, kick-out flashing, penetrations and clearances must direct that water back outside. During tear-off, we inspect the visible sheathing and document deterioration or installation problems that could not be confirmed beforehand.
Trim details also determine the finished result. Corners, openings, utility blocks, light fixtures, transitions and roof intersections should be included in the written scope. “Install siding” is not enough information for a homeowner comparing proposals.
Storm-Damaged Siding and Matching Questions
Hail and wind can crack vinyl, dent metal, damage engineered wood coatings and affect trim, gutters or roofing at the same property.
